NEW YORK, Feb. 26 (Yonhap) – S. Korean pianist Cho Seong-jin has stepped in for Russian pianist Denis Matsuev, whose performances got cancelled after Russia’s recent invasion of Ukraine, at Carnegie Hall in New York, United States.

Carnegie Hall announced on Feb. 25(U.S. Time) that Cho joined the performance of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra on Friday at 8 p.m.

The concert was initially scheduled to be in collaboration of global conductor Valery Gergiev and pianist Denis Matsuev.

However, Gergiev and Matsuev were excluded from the concert as they are known to have close connections to Russian leadership and publicly endorsed Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014.

As a result, Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducted the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, while Cho replaced Matsuev.

The pianist performed Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2

Carnegie Hall expressed gratitude to Cho who agreed to fly from Berlin to New York on very short notice for the performance.
