According to the Contents Power Index (CPI) released by CJ ENM on Tuesday, Mnet's "Girls Planet 999: The Girls Saga" ranked second place between Oct. 4-10, which is six notches up from the previous week. The CPI index was 333.3.
"Girls Planet 999: The Girls Saga," which began in August, is a survival idol audition program, where 33 trainees from Korea, China and Japan are selected to compete and debut as a girl group. However, only 9 out of the total 99 contestants will be selected as the final members.
In last week's episode, the remaining 26 idol trainees have carried out their last mission to advance to the final stage. At the end, a total number of 18 contestants survived the round, including the top 17 trainees as well as one trainee with a "Planet Pass."
In terms of survivors, trainee Shen Xiaoting ranked first, followed by Kim Da-yeon in second place whereas Kim Su-yeon landed at No. 17. Meanwhile, one of the Korean trainees, Guinn Myah, received a "Planet Pass," which is a vote made by the mentors to bring back an eliminated contestant back to the show. The 18 contestants will now compete for the final nine positions in order to debut as a girl group in the last episode of "Girls Planet 999."
"Girls Planet 999," a 100% viewer vote-based audition show created by Mnet, struggled to raise viewership ratings due to the vote rigging scandals from previous idol competition shows like "Produce 101." However, as clip videos of contestants became viral, more people have started to show interest in the formation of the new girl group.
It is also noteworthy that music and dance competition programs, including "Girls Planet 999," ranked first to third on the CPI. "Street Woman Fighter," a refreshing battle program centering around female street dance crews, maintained its No.1 spot following last week, while "Show Me the Money 10," the longest-running hip-hop contest program in Korea, rose one notch to third place.
Audition and competition programs have often been controversial due to suspicions of the contestant's private lives as well as manipulative editing to show a provocative unfold of events, however are still regarded as one of the most enjoyed shows among viewers.
In particular, "Street Woman Fighter" is considered positive as it is not a conventional audition program but one that provides an opportunity to reevaluate dancers who have only stayed behind artists on stage and discover new stars with hidden capabilities.
☞ Contents Power Index or CPI is an indicator on viewers' behavior based on direct searches, news subscriptions, and social media buzz. The index calculates programs with various genres such as dramas, entertainment, music, and infotainment from 29 different channels. Through the Response About Content On the Internet (RACOI), data, including number of video views, posts, and comments, are collected weekly and converted into standard scores based on 200 points to calculate the average.
