SEOUL, Jan. 26 (Yonhap) – James Cameron’s second venture of the Avatar franchise, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” is breaking records of the first “Avatar” in terms of cumulative sales to become the highest-grossing foreign film in South Korea.
The cumulative sales of “Avatar 2,” since its release in South Korea on Dec. 14, has passed the 100 billion won mark and recorded 128.5 billion won as of Wednesday afternoon, according to the integrated computer network for movie theater tickets in South Korea. This achievement of Cameron’s sequel utterly surpasses the 128.4 billion won that the 2009 epic “Avatar” brought in sales.
With such big numbers, “Avatar 2” became the highest-grossing foreign film released in South Korea and the fourth-highest film among all films, including those of Korea. The action comedy “Extreme Job,” released in 2019, is yet to maintain the top spot overall with 139.6 billion won.
“Avatar 2” officially surpassed $2 billion (KRW 2 trillion 473 billion) at the worldwide box office on Monday, sailing past the record of “Spider-Man: No-Way Home” ($1.916 billion), and ranked itself No.6 on the list of all-time grossing movies.
“‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ is the first and only post-pandemic film to hit the $2 billion mark, and the craze is expected to continue for the time being,” according to Walt Disney Korea.
Director James Cameron’s big-budget sequel captures the journey and battle of Jake Sullly – played by Sam Worthington – and Natalie – played by Zoe Saldana –, who have become the Na’vis from humans for the sake of their survivals.
