SEOUL, July 15 (Yonhap) -- South Korean island Jeju is drawing public attention as dramas and movies filmed in Jeju are making box office hits.

Total of 9 films filmed in Jeju including “Our Blues,” “Forecasting Love and Weather,” and “Kingdom: Ashin of the North” ranked in Global online video service platform (OTT) Netflix, announced Jeju Contents agency on Friday.

ENA channel drama “Extraordinary Attorney Woo,” filmed in Jeju in the first half of this year, is gaining popularity as its ratings sharply increased from 0.9% in the first episode to 9.1% in the fifth episode.

tvN drama “Alchemy of Souls,” which finished filming in Jeju at the end of last year, had the most viewers among its competitors that are aired at the same time.

Filmed in Jeju, “The Witch: Part 2. The Other One,” which predicted the rebirth of theaters after the pandemic, also received attention. Following the first series, "The Witch: Part 2. The Other One" attracted 2.78 million viewers, and in last June, it ranked third after "The Roundup" and "Jurassic World Dominion" with sales of 25 billion won (15.8%).

These works have one thing in common: they were all filmed in Jeju.

There are different reasons why production companies film in Jeju.

While number of film production in Jeju increased since 2020 due to the COVID-10, Jeju’s unique history, language, and culture, as well as wonderful natural environment of evergreen forest and sea, resulted in such phenomenon, analyzed Jeju Contents Agency

Jeju language received attention through tvN drama “Our Blues,”and Meo-ce-wat trail became famous as tourist attraction when it was described as a mysterious forest where "Saengsacho," which is said to save the dead, was discovered in Neflix Drama “Kingdom: Ashin of the North.”

Although it is not the filming location of the Netflix drama "Squid Game," foreign viewers’ interests soared when the North Korean defector, "Saebyeok" (Jung Ho-yeon), mentioned Jeju as a place where she wants to go with her family.

Jeju contents agency actively supports necessary things for filming, such as supporting video production costs, cooperating with filming sites, managing safety regarding the fire and police, sharing databases in the province, and renting filming equipment through the "Jeju Location Attraction and Support Project."

An official from the agency said, “This project can promote Jeju's natural environment and abundant tangible and intangible assets," adding, "As it attracts dramas and movies with large production costs, it affects production inducement, bringing positive effect on the local economy."

Jeju Contents Agency supported total of 536 films( 108 movies, 46 dramas, 382 video contents including documentary, music video, and CF etc.) after its establishment in 2018.
