SEOUL, May 26 (Yonhap) -- The Korea Forest Service announced on the 26th that it has selected 5 "Luxury National Forests", including Daegwallyeong Special Plantation, as it all possesses excellent landscape, ecological value and are good for travel.
The five forests that have been chosen are the Daegwallyeong Special Plantation in Daegwallyeong-myeon, Pyeongchang county, Gangwon-province, Dutasan Mureung Valley Forest in Samhwa-dong, Donghae city, Sinwonri Management Forest in Bibong-myeon, Cheongyang county, South Chungcheong province, Masil Healing Forest in Bonghyeon-myeon, Yeongju city, South Gyeongsang province, and Gyeryongsan Cypress Forest in Jangpyeong-dong, Geoje city, Gyeongnam province.
Daegwallyeong Special Plantation, a forest that has succeeded in reforestation by overcoming harsh climatic conditions of Daegwallyeong including strong winds and heavy snow has enabled the growth of boreal species like fir and spruce, making it historically and culturally valuable.
The Dutasan Mureung Valley Forest boasts its beautiful nature as it is a forest sanctuary where rare plants including elms and pine trees grow naturally.
Shinwon-ri Management Forest is a forest that is planned and managed by planting various trees such as birch and cypress, and there are 100,000 birch trees that make up the forest, creating an attractive landscape with pure white stems and green leaves.
Masil Healing Forest is located in the National Center for Forest Therapy. The growth conditions of trees like larch is ideal and the natural scenery is also beautiful. As there also is a forest path, it is a good for a quiet walk.
In Gyeryongsan Cypress Forest, cypress and cedar trees that were planted in 1963 make up a 29 hectare forest. As Urban forests and children's forest experience centers have already been established, residents would be able to experience the forests as well.
The Korea Forest Service is managing all 50 sites, including the five selected this time, as state-owned luxury forests.
"I recommend people who spent a difficult time due to COVID-19 to take a break in the forest for a while," Joo Yo-won, head of the national forest management department of the Korea Forest Service said. " We will also strengthen cooperation with local governments so that the state-owned luxury forest becomes a representative attraction in the mountain village.”
