SEOUL, May 4 (Yonhap) -- International flights at Yangyang Airport in Gangwon, which were paused due to COVID-19 is resuming after more than two years.

According to Gangwon province on the 4th, the international flight operation of Yangyang Airport was confirmed at the meeting of the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters.

It has been two years and four months since international routes such as Taipei, Taiwan and Philippines were paused in February 2020 due to COVID-19.

Now, Fly Gangwon, which uses Yangyang Airport as a mortage, started preparing for flights by selling airline tickets.

Additionally, the routes will be gradually expanded to Bangkok, Thailand, Narita/Osaka, Japan, Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Da Nang, Vietnam.

Along with the ministry of Justice, the province plans to implement a visa-free entry system for group tourists from four Asian countries, namely Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia and Mongolia who enter South Korea through Yangyang Airport.

The visa-free entry system aims to revitalize the tourism industry, and group tourists of 5 or more from these countries can tour Gangwon province and the metropolitan area for 15 days without visa when they have entered South Korea through Yangyang Airport.

Regarding the problems of visa-free entry, the relevant organizations decided to focus on preventing them before they enter South Korea.

Director Ahn Kwon-young for global investment and trade, said, "We will do our best to expand public transportation and other infrastructure so that Fly Gangwon, which uses Yangyang Airport as a mortgage, can take a leap forward, and turn it into an opportunity to recover the local economy."
