Canadian 3-star general named as new U.N. Command deputy chief
SEOUL, Nov. 20 (Yonhap) -- A Canadian three-star Army general has been appointed as the new deputy commander of the U.S.-led United Nations Command (UNC) headquartered in South Korea, officials have said.
Lt. Gen. Derek Macaulay will succeed British Lt. Gen. Andrew Harrison, who assumed duty in December 2021, at the command tasked with overseeing the armistice agreement that ended the 1950-53 Korean War.
"United Nations Command welcomes Canada's announcement of Major General Derek Macaulay promotion to lieutenant general and appointment as our next deputy commander," the UNC said in a Facebook post Saturday.
"We appreciate Canada's continued contribution to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and look forward to formally welcoming Lieutenant General Macaulay in 2024."
It marks the second time a Canadian general has been appointed to the position since 2018, according to the UNC.
Canada's current chief of the defense staff, Gen. Wayne Eyre, served as the UNC deputy chief from 2018 to 2019. He was the first non-American to serve in the position at the UNC.
