Nationwide anti-air raid civil defense drill set for later this month

SEOUL, Aug. 7 (Yonhap) -- The government will carry out a nationwide civil defense drill later this month to prepare for possible air raid situations, the interior ministry said Wednesday.

The drill, slated for Aug. 22, will begin at 2 p.m. and last for 20 minutes, during which people are required to evacuate to the nearest shelters. People can take shelter at an underground facility in case there is no shelter nearby.

The drill will begin with an air raid warning, followed by an alert warning before the alarm is lifted completely.

Some 17,000 locations, including apartment building basements, subway stations and underground shopping areas, have been designated as shelters, the interior ministry said. The locations of the shelters are available at the National Disaster and Safety portal, as well as Naver, Kakao and TMAP.

At the municipal level, a multiuse facility, such as a department store, will be designated as a training spot, where residents will conduct evacuation drills and master response measures for a possible air raid.

Cars traveling in areas where traffic is restricted should stop and pull over under police guidance for five minutes after the alarm goes off.

Restrictions on outdoor movement will be lifted at 2:15 p.m. upon an alert warning, and all restrictions will be removed and people can go back to their normal routines at 2:20 p.m., when the warning is lifted.

The interior ministry said hospitals, subways, airlines and ships will operate as normal on the day of the drill to minimize public inconvenience.
