PM to hold extraordinary Cabinet meeting to suspend 2018 inter-Korean military accord

SEOUL, Nov. 22 (Yonhap) -- Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will convene an extraordinary Cabinet meeting Wednesday to partially suspend a 2018 inter-Korean military accord in response to North Korea's latest launch of a military spy satellite, his office said.

Earlier, the National Security Council said it will take steps to suspend part of the 2018 deal and resume reconnaissance and surveillance activities around the inter-Korean border after the North claimed success in placing a satellite in orbit.

Han will preside over the meeting later in the morning, with the 2018 deal's partial suspension on the agenda, according to his office.

The North's launch took place late Tuesday (local time) from a launch site in Tongchang-ri on the country's northwest coast.

The Comprehensive Military Agreement, signed on Sept. 19, 2018, under the previous liberal administration of President Moon Jae-in, calls for halting all hostile military activity between the Koreas, setting up maritime buffer zones and turning the DMZ into a peace zone, among other measures.
