Bereaved family members of Itaewon crowd crush stage rally in central Seoul
SEOUL, Feb. 3 (Yonhap) -- The bereaved family members of the deadly 2022 crowd crush in the district of Itaewon staged a rally in central Seoul on Saturday, condemning President Yoon Suk Yeol for vetoing a special bill for a new investigation into the incident.
The demonstrators displayed 159 banners, each symbolizing a life lost during the tragic crowd crush in a narrow alley in the heart of Seoul's Itaewon on Halloween weekend in 2022.
The rally came after Yoon earlier this week vetoed a special bill mandating a new investigation into the case.
Yoon exercised his veto power by endorsing a motion demanding the National Assembly reconsider the legislation that the main opposition Democratic Party railroaded through the National Assembly in January.
The legislation calls for establishing a special investigation committee to reexamine the causes of the deadly crowd crush and to ensure the rights of the victims.
