Han Kang's books dominate South Korean bookstores after Nobel win
SEOUL, Oct. 11 (Yonhap) -- Novelist Han Kang's books surged in sales on South Korean online bookstores following her Nobel Prize in literature win, with over 130,000 copies sold in less than a day on two major platforms.
Kyobo Book Centre and Yes24 reported Friday that they sold over 60,000 and 70,000 copies, respectively, of Han's works. Her books have now sold out and are available only by preorder.
On Kyobo's bestselling list, nine of the top 10 titles are by Han, including "The Vegetarian," "Human Acts," "We Do Not Part," "The White Book" and "Greek Lessons."
The top seven are being sold on a reservation basis due to depleted stock. Sales at Kyobo have skyrocketed 451-fold since the Nobel announcement.
A similar trend occurred on Yes24, where Han's works dominate the top 10. "Human Acts," "The Vegetarian" and "We Do Not Part" took the top three spots, with sales surging 784-fold, 696-fold, and 3,422-fold, respectively. These three titles sold a combined 77,000 copies on Friday alone.
Aladin, another online bookstore, also saw Han's books claim the top eight positions on its chart.
"It marks the first time that Han's books have sold so rapidly since 'The Vegetarian,' which won the Man Booker International Prize," said Kim Hyun-jung, who has been in charge of bestselling books at Kyobo since 2008.
"The popularity was limited to that one book at that time, but now sales are spreading to all of Han's works," she added.
