KAI partners with German arms maker over weapons capabilities of S. Korean jets
SEOUL, Feb. 19 (Yonhap) -- Korea Aerospace Industries Co. (KAI) said Monday it has partnered with a German arms company to strengthen the weapons capabilities of South Korean-built fighter jets.
The memorandum of understanding signed between KAI and the Berlin-based Diehl Defence calls for cooperation on projects for strengthening the arms capabilities of South Korean fighter jets and joint marketing projects centered around the European market.
Diehl Defence specializes in missile development with a focus on the IRIS-T medium range air defense system. A signing ceremony for the agreement was held Sunday at the office of Diehl Defence in Berlin.
KAI said it plans to equip its KF-21 fighter jets with Diehl Defence's IRIS-T missiles. It plans to equip the same missiles on its FA-50 models in the future as well.
Kang Goo-young, CEO of KAI, said at the signing ceremony that the company anticipates expanding its exports to Europe and Africa through the partnership and joint marketing efforts with Diehl Defence.
