'KPop Demon Hunters' director to receive cultural merit
SEOUL, Dec. 10 (Yonhap) -- Maggie Kang, Korean-Canadian director of the Netflix hit animated film "KPop Demon Hunters," will be awarded South Korea's Okgwan (Jade Crown) Order of Cultural Merit for her role in boosting the global profile of K-culture, the culture ministry said Wednesday.
The U.S.-produced animation, which fused K-pop energy and Korean shamanistic motifs, became the most-watched title in Netflix's history across both film and television categories, surpassing the monumental success of "Squid Game."
The Okgwan Order is the fourth-highest class among the country's cultural decorations.
The honor will be presented later Wednesday during the 2025 Korea Content Awards at COEX in southern Seoul, hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency.
This year's ceremony will recognize 24 individuals and 15 works for their contributions to developing the nation's content industry.
