SEOUL, Oct. 28 (Yonhap) -- The ninth Pyeongchang Highland Kimchi Festival will take place from Nov. 4-16 at Jinbu Myeonmin Sports Park in Jinbu-myeon, Pyeongchang County.

The Pyeongchang Highland Kimchi Festival Committee said Wednesday it has increased the amount of kimchi-making experience kits by about 20 percent from last year and expanded the experience area and food facilities.

The festival will allow visitors to make kimchi themselves using locally grown highland napa cabbage, radishes, chili peppers, green onions and leaf mustard from Pyeongchang.

The regular kimchi-making experience costs 69,000 won for 10 kilograms, consisting of 7 kg of salted napa cabbage and 3 kg of seasoning.

A premium experience using napa cabbage salted with deep-sea water salt costs 79,000 won for 10 kg.

The amount prepared for the premium experience was increased by about 45 percent from last year, but all of the available slots were sold out on the day reservations opened on Oct. 20.

A young radish kimchi-making experience, consisting of 5 kg of salted young radishes and 2 kg of seasoning, costs 70,000 won.

The festival provides not only salted napa cabbage and seasoning but also plastic gloves, aprons, plastic bags and boxes for packaging, allowing visitors to participate without bringing additional supplies.

Finished kimchi can be shipped by parcel delivery directly from the festival site.

For the first time this year, a special promotional event for highland apples will be organized by the Pyeongchang Apple Research Association.

A sales event featuring agricultural and specialty products from about 20 local farms will also be held, along with a special sales booth for Daegwallyeong Hanwoo beef.

The food area will be separated from the kimchi-making area, and 20 additional worktables will be installed to improve visitor convenience.

Local foods including boiled pork, acorn jelly and dumpling soup made with Daegwallyeong Hanwoo beef broth and Odaesan traditional leaf mustard will also be offered.

About 80,000 people visited the festival last year, and the committee plans to promote longer stays by linking the kimchi-making experience with tourism at Odaesan and Daegwallyeong.

The festival will operate daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., accepting both advance reservations and on-site registrations.

Advance reservations can be made through the festival's official website or by phone. Visitors without reservations can also participate after waiting on-site. Parcel delivery will be accepted until 4:30 p.m. daily, with each box limited to 20 kg.

Parcels received from Friday through Sunday will be stored at the Jinbu Nonghyup low-temperature storage facility and shipped on Monday.

Pyeongchang Love Gift Certificates can be used to pay for the kimchi-making experience, while gifts received through the hometown donation program can also be used at the festival.

Jang Dong-sik, head of the festival committee, said Tuesday, "We have prepared the festival so families can experience kimchi-making traditions together while enjoying Pyeongchang's agricultural products and late-autumn tourism."
