SEOUL, Nov. 2 (Yonhap) -- The National Academy of Arts of Korea said on Monday that it will hold the "2026 National Academy of Arts of Korea Film Festival" at Seoul Cinema Center in Jung-gu, central Seoul, this Thursday and Friday.
Under the theme "How Can Cinema Survive in the Age of Artificial Intelligence?" this year's festival will premiere "Confirmation," a short film directed by artificial intelligence after studying the films of veteran director Im Kwon-taek and adopting his filmmaking style.
The film depicts a son who visits his father at a nursing home during the COVID-19 pandemic but is unable to meet him and eventually learns of his father's death. The AI-created film replicates Im's signature long-take technique, in which a scene is filmed continuously without cuts.
The festival will also screen AI-modified scenes from Bae Chang-ho's "The Young Man" and Chung Ji-young's "My Name Is." AI was used to realistically recreate a scene featuring a car engulfed in flames in "The Young Man" and to add a wind effect to the final scene of "My Name Is."
The festival will also select and screen eight outstanding short and mid-length AI films and invite their directors to participate in talks with audiences.
"The film festival will be a meaningful opportunity to find a wise course for Korean cinema amid the rough waves of artificial intelligence," an academy official said. "We invite everyone who loves movies to join us and hope for your interest and attendance."
