SEOUL, June 5 (Yonhap) -- The "K-Musical Market" will take place from June 2 to 6 at various venues in Seoul, said the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Arts Management Service, the event's hosts and organizers.
This year's K-Musical Market will be held in Daehak-ro area, including Link Art Center PAYCO Hall, Theater On, and Art Korea Lab.
Founded in 2021, the K-Musical Market is an event that promotes promising Korean musicals to domestic and international musical professionals and investors while facilitating the exchange of information.
Last year’s event saw a record attendance of about 2,500 participants, including 45 overseas figures from eight countries such as the UK, the US, China, and Japan.
This year, representatives from public performing arts institutions like the UK’s National Theatre and Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre, as well as from private sectors such as the Ambassador Theatre Group and Concord Theatricals in the English-speaking world, will participate. Executives from major Japanese production companies like Shiki Theatre Company, Toho Co., Ltd., and Horipro are also expected, making the event a key networking platform for the overseas expansion and investment promotion of K-Musicals.
The K-Musical Market will feature a variety of programs, including pitching sessions, showcases, and academic forums. The pitching program introduces original Korean musicals. A total of 22 works—12 in-progress and 10 completed—will be presented, each in 30-minute sessions that include a presentation, demonstration, and Q&A. This year, through a global pitching session linked with Japan's Emergency Network, around four Japanese works will also be introduced.
There will also be a forum on the topic of "Changes in Success Factors in the Global Musical Market" and special lectures by Korean and international musical experts.
Eight original Korean musicals that are premiering in Korea will participate in the showcase segment, presenting reading performances or key scenes of up to 40 minutes per work. As in the previous year, 12 works from the pitching and showcase sessions will be selected to receive support for participation in the "K-Musical Roadshow in Japan and New York" and Japan’s "Global Songwriter Showcase."
To facilitate tangible business outcomes, 1:1 business meetings will also be conducted. A total of 340 meetings are scheduled through pre-arranged and on-site matching, where active discussions on co-productions, licensing agreements, and investment opportunities are expected to take place.
