Sales increase in department store with spring sale, color cosmetics and clothing return ahead of lifting of social distancing

SEOUL, Apr. 18 (Yonhap) -- While social distancing for COVID-19 prevention will be completely lifted on the 18th, regular spring sales of department stores started from the beginning of this month, showed a two digit record of its growth rate.

Especially, with the expectation of turning into 'Endemic,' the sales of fashion, leisure goods, and color cosmetics have noticeably increased.

According to Hyundai Department Store on the 17th, the sales during spring sales from the 1st to 16th of this month increased 20.1% compared to the sales during the same period last year.

Goods related to outdoor activities including golf(69.8%) and outdoor(44.2%), as well as women fashion(29.5%) and kids(35.5%) showed high growth rate.

Also, color cosmetics which has shown poor sales growth after mask-wearing period, increased 45.1%, showing expectation for change in daily life.

Sinsegae Department Store also showed 27.1% sales growth in the same period.

The sales growth of outdoor related goods was remarkable as 43.7%, and sales in other categories also turned out well such as cosmetics(25.5%), women fashion(27.3%), men fashion(28.7%), and luxury items(22.3%).

LOTTE Department Store showed 20% increase in sales during this period.

The sales in fashion categories such as women clothing(20%), men clothes(10%), sports(30%), and kids(40%) increased a lot and that of cosmetics showing sales growth of 10%.

An industry official said, "There has been an increasing demand in clothing and cosmetics in which the sales have shrunk due to the reduce in outdoor activities, thanks to the expectations following the recent lifting of social distancing," adding, "especially, lipsticks are selling well, which have shown poor sales after the mask-wearing period, and it seems that demands of clothing and cosmetics will keep rising."
