SEOUL, Sept. 7 (Yonhap) -- Veteran actor O Yeong-su, who starred in global hit Netflix series "Squid Game," will participate in Emmy Awards.
This will be his first participation in foreign awards ceremony in his 59 years acting career.
O Yeong-su, during a phone call with Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday, said he will be leaving on the day of Chuseok holiday, major mid-autumn harvest holiday in Korea, to attend the ceremony, which will be held at Microsoft theater in U.S on Sept. 12 (Local time).
He is attending his first foreign awards in 59 years after he began acting at a theater in 1963. He could not attend Golden Globe Awards ceremony, where he received Best supporting actor award, backin last Jan. due to his play "Last Session."
The actor was nominated for the best supporting actor award for the role Oh Il-name, participant number one who was suffering from brain tumor, in Netflix series "Squid Game" along with actor Park Hae-soo.
The actor said, "Emmy is known as the worldwide award, and It's meaningful to be nominated," adding, "Whether I receive the award or not, I believe I was given such opportunity because S.Korea's drama has reached a global level.
O Yeong-su added, "I could not attend Golden Globe Awards but I can go to Emmy this time since we are only practicing for the play 'Love Letter.'"
He also stated it was nice to be nominated along with Korean actor among foreign actors.
He said, "I believe this is a competition in good faith," adding, "Since I received award last time, I hope Park Hae-soo wins the award, if not, I don't mind receiving the award."
Leading roles of "Squid Game" Lee Jung-jae, Park Hae-soo, Jung HoYeon will also be heading to Emmy.
Lee Jung-jae was nominated for Screen Actors Guild Awards, Spirit Awards, Critics Choice, and Best actor award, and he will be leaving for U.S on Thursday.
Park Hae-soo will fly on Friday, and Best actress award nominee Jung HoYeon will attend the ceremony after her schedule finishes.
"Squid Game" received Guest, Visual effect, Stunt Performance, and Production design awards at Creative Arts Primetime Emmy awards on Sept. 4.
The series is competing for six categories along with best picture award at this awards ceremony, which will be taking place on Sept. 12.
