Moon hopes S.Korean tidal flats to become precious world heritage shared worldwide

SEOUL, July 27 (Yonhap) -- Regarding South Korea's tidal flats officially being inscribed as UNESCO world natural heritage, President Moon Jae-in said Tuesday that "the government will work with local governments to preserve the ecosystem of tidal flats, develop local communities, and aid Korean tidal flats to become a precious world heritage shared by people worldwide."

"This is very good news," President Moon wrote on an SNS post. "This result was brought by the World Heritage Promotion Team of Korean Tidal Flat and relevant authorities working together to actively inform and persuade the precious value of our tidal flats."

"I appreciate the affection and interest of the local people who have kept the tidal flats as their site of living," President Moon added.

"The four tidal flats existing across the country's coastal areas are Seocheon, Gochang, Sinan, Boseong and Suncheon, which are the most important areas for the survival of endangered water birds and organisms of more than 2,000 species," President Moon said.

"Now we possess 15 world heritage sites," President Moon said. "The tidal flats are the country's second natural site after the 'Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes' were inscribed in 2007. We will continue to work on listing more Korean tidal flats as world heritage sites."
