SEOUL, Jan. 27 (Yonhap) – The 30th Taebaeksan Snow Festival, the representative winter festival held in the city of Taebaek in Gangwon Province, kicked off on Friday in the city of snow.
The Festival will be held for the first time in three years due to the pandemic; as if they were making amends for the three years visitors have missed, more magnificent and marvelous snow sculpture exhibitions and various snowy events are waiting for visitors at this year’s Festival.
A Taebaeksan version of winter Wonderland is brought to the main venue of the Festival, the Danggol Square at the Taebaeksan National Park, with an array of beautiful, large snow sculptures standing in every nook and cranny of the Square, including the Wonderland castle, Mickey Mouse, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Cinderella’s Pumpkin Wagon.
The largest snow sculpture awaiting the visitors will be a 40-meter-long, 7-meter-high, and 6-meter-wide sculpture titled the “Animated Kingdom.” Various winter games are also prepared for family tourists, including traditional kite flying, traditional spinning-top, and riding ice sleds or large snow slides.
A starlight festival is also being held at the Hwangji Pond in the center of the city of Taebaek, where visitors can enjoy the beautiful winter night of Taebaek.
The National Snowflake Hiking Competition in Taebaeksan Mountain will also be open for hikers on two different tracks on Jan. 29: A track starting from the Yuilsa Temple to Cheonjedan to the Munsubong Peak and ending at the Dangol Square; another track going the opposite direction, starting from the Dangol Square to Banjae to Cheonjedan to Munsubong Peak and going back to the Dangol Square.
The opening ceremony of the Competition will be held at 5 p.m. on Friday at the special stage set up near the Cultural Plaza of the Hwangji Pond.
Mayor Lee Sang-ho of Taebaek said, “We look forward to everyone enjoying the genuine beauty of nature in winter that can be experienced in the city of snow, Taebaek.”
